Abstract

According to Boyer's model of scholarship, there are 4 types of scholarship, namely, scholarship of discovery, scholarship of application, scholarship of integration, and scholarship of education. Although scholarship of discovery and application serve as the center of academic life, scholarship of integration, involving synthesis of information across disciplines, across topics within a discipline, or across time, has become more and more important, due to the merging of conventional disciplines and emerging of new integrative areas. In this talk, the speaker will share his experience on how integrative (cross-layer and multi-disciplinary) design has been applied to the research on communication network and learning, specifically how the conventional communication network has evolved from a network to share data (Data-Net), to a network to connect computation power (Computation-Net), and eventually to a network that integrates intelligence (Intelligence-Net), and how AI and robotics are revolutionizing pedagogic research.

Speaker

Dr. Song S.H. is now an Associate Professor of Engineering Education in the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. His research is primarily in the areas of statistical signal processing and wireless communications systems with current focus on Edge Computing and Edge AI. He is also interested in the research on Engineering Education and is now serving as an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Education. He has won several teaching awards at HKUST, including the Michael G. Gale Medal for Distinguished Teaching, the Best Ten Lecturers, the School of Engineering Distinguished Teaching Award, and the Teachers I Like Award.
